When Ilana was in first grade, she visited her mom's friend Mary Anne every Monday. Initially, she didn't question who Mary Anne was, but over time she started to understand that she was being treated for something that nobody was willing to tell her about, and that separated her from the others.

Ilana Bean

Ilana Bean is a writer and visual artist currently based in Ireland. She holds an MFA in Nonfiction Writing from the University of Iowa where she received the Iowa Arts Fellowship. Her work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and can be found in publications like Guernica, Gawker, The Rumpus, and Chicago Review of Books.
